After Effects won't open under my user...
(but opens under the "student" login)

This is usually caused by corrupt preferences and can be remedied by following the steps outlined below:

While logged in as your user (or the user having the problem), click on the desktop to ensure that your active application is the Finder. Then, use the "Go" menu (shown below)-

to go to the folder "~/Library/Preferences" (don't use the quotes, they're just here to set off what should go into the window)

Then when that folder opens, delete the "com.Adobe.After Effects 8.0.2.plist" file and the "com.adobe.AfterEffects.plist" files as shown below:

Finally, check the "Adobe" folder still under "~/Library/Preferences" and delete any "After Effects" related preferences.

After these files have been deleted and the trash has been emptied, After Effects should open up for you properly.
